LE CHAMPIONNAT DU MONDE FIA DES RALLYES 2017 S’EST ACHEVÉ EN AUSTRALIE SUR UNE VICTOIRE DE THIERRY NEUVILLE (HYUNDAI/MICHELIN), VICE-CHAMPION DU MONDE. LE PODIUM AUSTRALIEN EST COMPLÉTÉ PAR OTT TANAK (FORD/MICHELIN) ET HAYDEN PADDON (HYUNDAI/MICHELIN).
L’équipe Hyundai Motorsport a dominé la dernière manche 2017 disputée sur les pistes en terre de Nouvelle Galles du Sud. Vainqueur sortant, le Norvégien Andreas Mikkelsen a profité de sa bonne position de départ pour remporter les quatre premières spéciales et boucler la première étape en tête avec 20s1 d’avance sur son équipier Thierry Neuville.
Derrière les deux Hyundai, Kris Meeke (Citroën), Latvala (Toyota) et Craig Breen (Citroën) se tenaient en 10 secondes, alors que les Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin de Tanak et Ogier pointaient aux 6e et 7e rangs après quelques soucis techniques.
La pluie tant annoncée a partiellement arrosé les spéciales du samedi, rendant les choix de pneumatiques encore plus compliqués. Chaussé de pneus Michelin LTX Force S5 (soft), Thierry Neuville a remporté la longue spéciale de Nambucca (48,89 km) pour revenir à 15s6 du leader, lequel a commis une faute de pilotage dans l’ES suivante. Mikkelsen n’a pu poursuivre l’aventure, laissant son équipier Thierry Neuville filer vers sa 4e victoire de la saison et la place de vice-champion du monde 2017.
Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota/Michelin) était 2e avant de sortir de la route dans la toute dernière spéciale, laissant Ott Tanak (2e, Ford/Michelin) et Hayden Paddon (3e, Hyundai/Michelin) sur le podium australien. Le Champion du monde 2017 Sébastien Ogier (4e, Ford/Michelin) n’a pas été épargné par les soucis ce week-end, mais ce fut pire encore pour l’équipe Citroën Racing avec trois retraits sur sorties de route.
Ce Rallye d’Australie fut à l’image d’une saison FIA WRC 2017 particulièrement disputée et ô combien passionnante. Thierry Neuville (4), Sébastien Ogier (2), Kris Meeke (2), Ott Tanak (2), Esapekka Lappi (1) et Elfyn Evans (1) se sont imposés cette année.
Le Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA reprendra le 25 janvier 2018 sur les routes du mythique Rallye Monte-Carlo.

The 2017 campaign’s Coffs Harbour-based all-gravel finale in New South Wales was dominated by Hyundai Motorsport. Last year’s victor Andreas Mikkelsen took advantage of a favourable start order to win the first four stages and appear in front at the end of Day 1, 20.1s clear of team-mate Neuville.
At this point, Kris Meeke (Citroën), Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota) and Craig Breen (Citroën) were covered by 10 seconds in third, fourth and fifth places, while Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin drivers Ott Tanak (6th) and Sébastien Ogier (7th) were next in the order after being delayed by technical troubles.
Saturday’s partly-wet stages made tyre choice complex but Neuville, who opted for the soft-compound version of the Michelin LTX Force, won the long Nambucca test (48.89km) to close to within 15.6s of Mikkelsen. The Norwegian then retired for the day after a mistake on the following stage, leaving his Belgian team-mate to cruise to his fourth victory of the season and make sure of the runner-up title.
Latvala (Toyota/Michelin) was heading for second spot when he crashed out on the very last test, which promoted Tanak and Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) to second and third places respectively. The 2017 world champion Ogier ended up fourth after suffering a variety of problems, but the trip to Australia proved worse for Citroën Racing whose three drivers all crashed.
The 2017 Rally Australia mirrored the close, exciting action that was a hallmark of the season which saw Thierry Neuville (4 wins), Sébastien Ogier (2), Kris Meeke (2), Ott Tanak (2), Esapekka Lappi (1) and Elfyn Evans (1) all claim rounds.
The FIA World Rally Championship will resume on January 28, 2018, with the celebrated Rallye Monte-Carlo.
