    Snapshot, 1967: Johnny Hallyday fires up the Mustang


    Think of an internationally famous rock ’n’ roll star who isn’t from an English-speaking country. Bet you can only think of one: Johnny Hallyday, widely known as the French Elvis Presley...
    Jean-Philippe Smet, to give him his real name, was born in Paris in 1943 and came to fame in the 1960s, singing rock and roll in his native language of French. Hence he was already a rock star when this picture was taken in 1967, as evidenced by the paparazzi outside the window of his Mustang. Hallyday still (occasionally) sings live, despite having ‘retired’ in 2009, and indeed his first ever live UK performances were in 2012. He lives in Switzerland, for tax reasons.

    Sette Nero Manta

    Think back to that awkward chat you might have had with the careers advisor about what you wanted to be when you grew up. Doubtful that the builder of this bike, Andrea Felice, ever needed to have such a conversation. His grandfather was a Baroque master carver and his father a furniture maker and teacher of cabinet making, no surprise then that Andrea would be a ‘maker’ too. After studying Industrial Design the call of genetics took over and Andrea moved to London to set up a now highly acclaimed furniture making business. A sucker for BMWs, he’s owned many over the years and a decade ago completed his first cafe racer build, a ’78 R80 called Biplano, and Sette Nero Motorcycles was born.

    This latest build, Manta, is based on a 1980 R100T frame and engine. The swingarm has been braced and modified with a fully adjustable Showa mono-shock connected directly to the centre of the frame’s top tube with no linkage. The subframe is also bespoke and welded to the main frame.

    The front end is from a BMW K75 with beefier 41mm stanchions and uprated twin disc set up.

    Carbon headlight with integrated warning lights and a small, simple speedo are the obvious flashes of modernity, the engine and chassis will remind the rider that this isn’t a normal eighties Beemer with a few cafe racer tweaks.

    A Heinrich endurance tank has had the knee recesses cut out and remade with fibreglass and sealed on the inside, allowing a clearer view of the suspension mods and ignition trickery. The battery is relocated in a custom aluminium box right down low, underneath the engine. Feet up on the billet rear sets and knees tucked up into the tank, the Manta is going to feel very lithe indeed.

    The engine has been fully rebuilt and dynamically balanced by Jim Cray Engineering to create an almost zero miles unit, with new pistons and barrels by Siebenrock, ported heads and an electronic ignition conversion for the double spark plug set up. 40mm Dellortos on K&Ns replace the old Bings which sets a precedent for the exhaust to follow. A slender, in-house fabricated, stainless steel 2-into-1 feeds neatly into a stubby Supertrapp low-down on the right side. The gearbox also received the full rebuild treatment, no expense spared on this build then!

    Front and rear rims have been relaced with stainless spokes and reduced by one inch in diameter to sharpen the handling.

    Honda CRF450X Cafe Racer

    The engine in the Honda CRF450X wasn’t designed to sit in a motorcycle that looked quite like this – originally designed for off-road work, the liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke 449cc power unit was never meant for use on the asphalt. Despite being designed for trail and dirt use, off-road motorcycle engines often make fantastic powerplants for lightweight cafe racers – they’re built to be light, reliable, high-revving all highly desirable traits for modern followers of the 59 Club philosophy.
    This bike is the second in the Sibling Rivalry series built by Woolie at Deus Ex Machina in California, he dubbed the bike “Dakdaak”, which is a fun word to say but has no apparent meaning in any known human language. As previously mentioned, it’s fitted with a a Honda CRF450X stage two motor that was specially prepped by Jim Wood at Southland racing with two-millimeter oversize stainless steel valves for reliability and longevity.
    Interestingly, the forks are also from the original CRF450X, they’ve been re-valved, shortened, then adjusted for street performance by Ed Sorbo at Lindeman Engineering. The tank takes its design influence from the other bike in the Sibling Rivalry series – Boondaak, and it also has a similar custom-made chromoly frame and swing arm.
    Personally, I love creative builds like this one, that repurpose motorcycles from entirely different genres into new bikes that are capable performers in an entirely unrelated class. If you’d like to enquire after this bike you can click here to visit Deus Ex Machina.

    Then and Now: The BMW GS


    As we have reported countless times before, adventure motorcycling is currently enjoying explosive growth. Fueled by Ewen McGregor’s rides around the globe, a motorcycling demographic entering a particular age and financial bracket, or just lucky happenstance, adventure riding is the thing to do.  If your motorcycle doesn’t have a set of knobblies, you’ve really missed the boat. At the confluence of rider enthusiasm and manufacturer offerings is the legendary motorcycle that arguably started it all, the BMW GS. This year the entire line of GS bikes sold at a record breaking tempo with roughly 50,000 units leaving dealer floors. BMW’s best selling motorcycle was the new water-pumping R1200GS. There’s no doubt it’s an amazing machine, but does it deliver on the promise of the original GS from three decades ago. What was it then, and what is it now?

    The Birth of a Legend
    The early years of the GS were filled with answers to questions few people had ever bothered to ask. What happens when an unrelated collection of parts are combined and lobbed into the dirt? A GS is what happens. These were the late 70s and off-road motorcycle racing was gaining in popularity even as it struggled to define itself. BMW recognized the potential, and by the first year of the 80s had introduced a revolutionary steed in the R80GS. At 368 pounds the 797cc air-cooled, flat-twin boxer engine produced 50 hp. It performed exceptionally well, proving itself on the race circuit wherever it went.
    While BMW clearly recognized the racing opportunities, they also had the foresight to see this bike had the potential to redefine the touring world. As 1981 came to a close, BMW had sold almost 7,000 of their new GS bikes. To put that in perspective, this year BMW sold 25,000 water-cooled R1200GS motorcycles, and that’s one of the most popular models of all time.
    Prior to 1980, most bikes designed for the dirt, even in a split dirt/pavement configuration, were rather small of displacement. A bike with a 797cc engine was at the time, what riders today would dub a “big bike.” With its Monolever, single-sided rear swingarm, it was also presenting revolutionary technology. Throw in a big tank, the ability to haul a considerable amount of gear and a new travel segment was born.

    The Evolution of the GS
    By the late 80s, the GS had grown up a tad and a new 980cc engine produced an additional 10 hp. Sales were booming and considerable refinements were being made to the driveline and chassis. The Paris-Dakar edition bike of this era was a thing of beauty and was fitted with a colossal 9.25 gallon tank, solo seat, and was in many ways the “Adventure” model of its day.

    Without getting too detailed with the evolution of the GS, at least with the bigger variant, it would be safe to say it has undergone a carefully plotted evolution. Refinements have been made consistently to the design of the motorcycle as new technology was made available. It went from being air-cooled to oil-cooled. It was the recipient of BMW’s innovative Telelever front suspension. It was given ABS, traction control, and a host of other technical advancements. As more power and features were added, so too was a considerable amount of heft. By the time the year 2000 rolled around, the big GS tipped 530 pounds. Toss on some luggage and a few farkles, and it was breaking 600 pounds with ease.
    By 2005, the engine had been pushed to its current 1200cc displacement. Power had finally reached 100 hp and as is the case with any pinnacle product, the price followed suit. Soaring past the $10,000 and then $15,000 marks, the latest GS bikes are a considerable investment, but then again, they represent the very best of the segment they helped create. Other platforms from other manufactures have challenged the GS as the King of Adventure, but they have all been foiled usurpers of that throne.


    This is a big year for the GS as it ushers in a new era with the arrival of the water-cooled R1200GS in “Adventure” trim. It really is a stunner and once again proves BMW is the driving force in adventure riding. With 125 hp on tap, an arsenal of electronic rider aids, a large fuel range, heavy cargo capacity, and off-road chops that can only be described as incredible, the new big bike from Bavaria is a smashing success, and the first unit has yet to be delivered.
    Then and Now
    When it was first introduced, the R80GS was the proverbial game changer. Nothing like it had existed before, at least not in such a refined final design. They had a clear vision of their target audience and through smart marketing held full reign over that demographic for the entire span of the last three decades. The R80GS may not have seemed large at the time, and maybe it really wasn’t, but it does serve as the era’s then big bike. It was sold with the promise of adventure, and it delivered. By comparison, the R1200GS of today, and certainly the R1200GS-A on the immediate horizon, echo that original directive. Even the pricing has remained relatively constant through the years. That first GS was not cheap. The most recent is going to push well into the twenties with full farkle.


    It’s quite refreshing to see a manufacturer maintain such loyalty to an original design for so long. The 2014 GS and GS-Adventure bikes are true descendants of that first R80GS in price, function and spirt. They beg to be loaded with a month's worth of kit and driven across the horizon. They embody the best of the segment, and symbolize more than just a lifestyle, but a community that transends borders. Over the last 30 years, the GS experience has not changed one iota. It is now precisely what it was then.

    Some people like lots of shiny chrome on their pride and joy, while others prefer the aged look of patina. Today’s bike firmly falls into the second category – with a finish that looks like it was pulled from a swamp. The builder, Janne Martola is an artist hailing from Finland, his artistic expertise being built into this well worn Kawasaki 750LTD. Buying it as a non runner three years ago, Janne has spent the last three years fine-tuning the machine – both aesthetically and mechanically – in a manner which appealed to his tastes and budget. Used as an expedition machine for Janne’s to access places of an interesting nature, this bike is a custom which is ridden hard. On occasion the Kwaka has to pass for a scrambler in it’s duties, and this it does admirably for a bike that was so vanilla when it left the factory. Built in a small garage on a shoestring budget, the bike may not appeal to everyone’s taste but it is definitely a custom in the truest sense of the term. And the fact it’s an everyday rider makes it all the more interesting. But you can probably tell that from the patina.

    This has to be the sickest Jeep we’ve seen all year, and we’ve seen quite a few. A 5-door Wrangler has been brought to the next level of coolness thanks to a partnership between many famous names in the business.

    The main driving force behind the project is Forgiato. It’s easy to think of them as “the company that makes stupid wheels for rappers”, but they’re not. A quick check of their website reveals a small army of people working on innovations in a number of areas. They really had our attention with thatwidebody Corvette and now this. How can you not love their work?

    Anyway, getting back the project at hand, the white truck has been fitted with two different sets of wheels, the black Rivoto-T and white Massa-T, our favorite being the latter. Both sets are available as 22- and 24-inch rims and have been shod in Toyo offroad tires.

    Big fenders, LED accessory lights, a custom metal scuff plate, bull bars and lift suspension from BDS Supension all change the Jeep. Forgiato puts a nice finishing touch on the exterior with one of their custom grilles.

    Inside, a new Tactical/Lux Interior by Coverking has been installed, with full leather set of covers that are both cool and extremely durable. Their diamond pattern is worth noting, as is the sound system thumping out of the back.
